How to Use Solancr
Creating a QR code on Solancr takes about a minute. This page explains each step, the choices you will make, and how to get the best result for print or digital use.
Before You Start
You do not need an account, an email address, or any software installed on your computer. Solancr runs in a normal web browser on desktop, tablet, or phone. The only thing you need is the content you want the QR code to open.
It also helps to decide in advance where the code will be used. A code printed on a business card, for example, is scanned at close range and can be smaller. A code on a poster is scanned from further away and needs more space around it. Knowing this upfront will save you a reprint later.
Step 1: Choose a QR Code Type
Start on the QR Types page. You will see 24 options grouped by what they do. Links go under URL. Network credentials go under WiFi. Contact details go under vCard. If you are unsure which one fits, think about what you want the phone to do the moment the code is scanned. If the answer is "open a web page", use URL. If it is "save a contact", use vCard. If it is "connect to WiFi", use WiFi.
Each QR type has its own page because the fields are different. A WiFi code needs a network name and password. A vCard needs a name, phone number, and email. A URL code only needs one link. Picking the right page first means you will not waste time filling in fields you do not need.
Step 2: Fill in the Form
On the QR type page, you will see a form on the left and a preview area on the right. As you type, the QR code updates in real time. There is no submit button and no waiting for a server response, because the code is being generated on your own device.
A few things to keep in mind while filling in fields:
- Use the full URL including
https://for link-based codes. Without the protocol, some scanners will not open it correctly. - For WiFi codes, the network name is case sensitive. Enter it exactly as it appears when you connect from a phone.
- For phone numbers, use the international format with a country code. This ensures the code works regardless of where it is scanned.
- Shorter content produces a simpler QR pattern, which scans faster and can be printed smaller.
If the preview does not look right, adjust the fields. The code reflects exactly what is in the form at that moment.
Step 3: Test the Code
Before you download, scan the code on screen with your phone camera. This takes a few seconds and catches typos before anything is printed. If the phone opens the wrong page or shows an error, go back to the form and check the input.
This step is worth doing every time. Once a code is printed on a hundred flyers, it is too late to fix.
Step 4: Download the Code
Below the preview you will find three download buttons: PNG, JPG, and WEBP. Each one saves the code to your device in that format. Pick the one that matches how you plan to use the image.
- PNG keeps sharp edges and is the best choice for printing. Use this for posters, business cards, and packaging.
- JPG produces a smaller file and is fine for websites and social media where file size matters.
- WEBP is a modern format with good quality at small sizes, useful on sites that already use WEBP images.
All three formats contain the same code. The difference is purely how the image is stored.
Step 5: Place the Code Correctly
A QR code needs a clear margin around it, called a quiet zone. Leave at least a small border of empty space on all four sides so scanners can lock onto the pattern. Do not crop the image tight to the black squares.
Print the code at a size that matches the scanning distance. As a rough rule, the code should be at least one tenth of the distance from which it will be scanned. A code scanned from two meters away should be at least twenty centimeters wide.
Avoid placing QR codes on curved surfaces, behind glass with reflections, or on backgrounds that reduce contrast. Black on white remains the most reliable combination.
Using the Site Offline
Solancr is a progressive web app. After your first visit, the core files are cached in your browser. On later visits, the site loads from the cache instead of downloading files again. This makes repeat visits faster and also lets the site work without an internet connection for generating QR codes.
You can add Solancr to your home screen from your browser menu. Once added, it behaves like a normal app and opens with a single tap.
Common Questions
Do I need to keep the browser tab open?
No. Once the code is downloaded, the image file lives on your device. The site does not need to stay open and does not need to be visited again for that code to work.
Can I edit the code after downloading?
Solancr creates static QR codes, which means the data is baked into the pattern. You cannot edit the destination of an existing code. If something needs to change, generate a new one and replace the printed copy.
Can I change colors or add a logo?
The current version focuses on reliable, high-contrast codes that scan on any device. Color and logo options add risk of scan failure and are not part of this release.
Are the downloads really free?
Yes. There is no paywall, no account tier, and no watermark. Every download on every format is free.
